Biodiversity Net Gain

Mountain Ash Ecology provides specialist Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) assessments to support planning applications and development projects across Worcestershire, Warwickshire, Gloucestershire, the Cotswolds, and the wider Midlands.

BNG is a statutory requirement for most developments in England, requiring a minimum 10% increase in biodiversity value compared with the pre-development baseline, subject to relevant exemptions.

We undertake habitat surveys, habitat condition assessments, and statutory biodiversity metric calculations to establish the existing biodiversity value of a site and assess how the required gain can be achieved. We also provide advice on habitat creation and enhancement, Biodiversity Gain Plans, and Habitat Management and Monitoring Plans (HMMPs).

Our approach combines technical expertise with practical advice, helping clients understand their BNG obligations and identify achievable solutions for their development.

What does a BNG Assessment involve?

A BNG assessment begins with a habitat survey using the UK Habitat Classification (UKHab) methodology. Existing habitats are identified, mapped, and assessed for their condition to establish the site's baseline biodiversity value.

The statutory biodiversity metric is then used to calculate the biodiversity units associated with the existing habitats and the proposed development. This allows potential habitat losses and gains to be quantified and identifies whether the development can achieve the required 10% net gain.

Where necessary, we provide advice on habitat retention, creation, and enhancement to help achieve the required biodiversity gains. We can also prepare Biodiversity Gain Plans and Habitat Management and Monitoring Plans (HMMPs), setting out how habitats will be established, managed, and monitored over the required period.

When is BNG required?

BNG is mandatory for most developments requiring planning permission in England, although certain exemptions apply. Developments subject to the requirement must demonstrate how a minimum 10% increase in biodiversity value will be achieved.

BNG applies to a wide range of developments, including residential, commercial, and industrial projects. However, some proposals may qualify for exemptions, including certain householder applications, self-build developments, and developments with very limited impacts on existing habitats, subject to the relevant eligibility criteria.

Considering BNG at an early stage can help identify opportunities to retain and enhance existing habitats, incorporate biodiversity improvements into development designs, and reduce the potential need for off-site biodiversity units.

Mountain Ash Ecology provides advice on BNG requirements and potential exemptions, helping clients understand their obligations and develop practical approaches to achieving biodiversity gains.
